Costadina Aneziris
Anthropology, University of Illinois at Chicago
Costadina, who hails from Skokie, Illinois, has begun her studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago, majoring in Anthropology. She is a member of the Honors College, and the Guaranteed Professional Program for Pharmacy. An Illinois State Scholar and Member of the National Honor Society, her interests include figure skating, art, and playing the violin; she is fluent in both Greek and Spanish.
Marina Margarita Basseas
Political Science, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Already on the Dean’s List at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, Marina is from Park Ridge, Illinois, and active in the youth organization of Mani, Greece and the Pontian Society of Chicago. She is an Illinois State Scholar, a Member of the National Honors Society and maintained Honor Roll status all four years in high school. She is also a graduate of the St. Haralambos Parish Greek School, and an avid athlete, traveler and pianist.
Margarite Anne Bechis
Psychology, University of New Hampshire
​Brookline, N.H.’s Margarite Anne graduated in the Top 6 in her high school class and will be attending the University of New Hampshire. A Member of the National Honors Society and recipient of numerous recognitions, she also achieved the highest grade-point average in Greek Language and Culture at the 2006 Summer Camp program in Cyprus. She is actively involved in community service and the performing arts.
Eunice Garifalia Buhler
International Relations, Stanford University
A graduate of Lake Forest High School in Illinois and the St. Andrew Parish Greek School, Eunice has now begun her studies at Stanford University, majoring in International Relations with a minor in Classics. She is the Founder and President of “Cultures for Youth,” a non-profit organization that promotes cultural enrichment and diversity world-wide, and oversaw construction of a library in Jinga, Uganda. Eunice is active in Youth Service America and a number of other service groups.
Artemis Denekos
Accounting, DePaul University
A graduate of Maine-East High School in Park Ridge, Artemis has begun her studies in the top 5% of her class in the DePaul U. College of Commerce and was accepted into the Accounting Honors Program of the Strobel Accountants Program at DePaul University. Active in a wide range of extra-curricular teams and clubs, she has dedicated much of her time and talents to the Greek-American Nursing Home in Wheeling, IL. Born in Greece, she is fluent in Greek and French as well.
Stacy Peggy Economy (Economopoulos)
Architecture, Illinois Institute of Technology
Graduating in the top 10% of her class at Prospect H.S. in Mt. Prospect, IL, Stacy is attending the Illinois Institute of Technology where she is studying Architecture. As Concertmistress of the Prospect H.S. Symphony Orchestra, she is equally talented as a musician and performing artist, and has also taught Sunday School for four years at the St. Nectarios Parish. Other interests include inter-national travel and cross-country running.
Lia Eliades
Classics, University of California-Berkeley
Lia hails from Petaluma, California and has begun her studies at the University of California –Berkeley. Included in the 2006 “Who’s Who of American High School Students” and the National Honor Roll, she has already distinguished herself there, receiving the E. Frank Kraft Award for Freshmen and the Pritchett Prize for “Best Student in Beginning Greek.” Lia is active in the Nativity of Christ Parish in Novato, California and volunteer at the Monastery in Dunlap.
Katerina Georgiafentis
Speech Communication, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
​Graduating 31st in her class of nearly 600 at Palatine H.S. in Palatine, IL, and a Member of the National Honors Society, Katerina is currently attending the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana majoring in Speech Communication. Her talents in the Performing Arts led her to featured roles and leadership positions during her high school years, and her commitment to her Faith to teaching Sunday School and feeding the needy at Chicago’s Pacific Garden Mission Center.
Demitra Athena Giannaras
Psychology and Business Marketing, Loyola University Chicago
35th in her graduating class at Lake Park High School in Roselle, IL, an Illinois State Scholar and recipient of a President’s Award, Demitra is attending Loyola University where she is majoring in Psychology and Business Marketing. A student of literature as well as a promising writer and artist, Demitra’s interests include music, playing the clarinet, photography and poetry. She has received a National Student Leadership Council Award as well.
Eleni Gouvas
Modern Greek, History, and Political Science, University of Michigan
​A graduate of Oak Park & River Forest H.S. in Illinois, and pursuing studies in Modern Greek, History and Political Science at the University of Michigan –Ann Arbor, Eleni has earned University Honors for both the Fall, 2006 and Winter, 2007 terms and was a Member of the Cum Laude Society in 2003 and 2004. She is active in her community, serving as an officer of the Hellenic Student Assn., a volunteer at the St. Nicholas Parish in Ann Arbor and Member of the Kyklos Dance Troupe.
Vasilios Kalas
Biology, University of Chicago
Graduating second in his graduating class of 932 at Carl Sandburg High School in Orland Park, IL, and therefore Class Salutatorian, Vasilios is attending the University of Chicago. A Commended National Merit Scholar, a 2006 AP Scholar with Distinction, and recipient of Outstanding Achievement Awards in Science, Math and overall Academics, he is also a gifted jazz pianist as evidenced by selection for the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award.
Paul Koukouvanis
Accounting, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Paul is a graduate of Chicago’s Northside College Preparatory High School, and currently a James Scholar at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. He is the recipient of the Prairie State Achievement Award in Reading, Mathematics and Science, while his athletics were recognized with a Leadership Award in Tennis. His community activities include teaching Sunday School at the St. Demetrios Parish, a participant in the Metropolis of Chicago Junior Olympics and as a Member of the Hellenic Dance Troupe.
Eugenia Kyriakopoulos
Biology, University of Illinois in Chicago
Also graduating second, in her class of 596, Eugenia is studying in the Honors College of the University of Illinois at Chicago, majoring in Biology on her way to medical school, with a minor in Spanish. She has received numerous recognitions, both for her academic performance as well as her community service at Advocate Christ Medical Center, garnering her a Cook County Sheriff’s Award for Service for two consecutive years.
Argie Maria Lafakis
Biology, University of Alabama
Hailing from Birmingham, Alabama, Argie is a graduate of Hoover High School where she maintained a GPA of 3.83 out of 4.0 while taking Honors courses in Biology, Chemics, AP Chemistry and Anatomy, as well as 3 years of French, Psychology (AP) and Sociology. She attends the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa where she has received the Phi Eta Sigma and Sigma Alpha Lambda awards and a Member of the Orthodox Christian Fellowship.
Nicholas Lalos
Agricultural & Consumer Economics, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Winfield, Illinois native Nicholas graduated in the top 15% of his class at St. Charles East H.S., maintaining a 5.0 GPA with AP courses in Government and MacroEconomics, receiving both Junior and Senior Class Honors and being inducted as a Member of the Math Honor Society. An avid athlete as well, he has distinguished himself on the soccer field, both as a PhyEd Leader and weekend referee. He is beginning his higher education at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana.
Eleni Liakaris
Art, St. John's University in Queens
A resident of Bayside, New York, Eleni is studying Art at St. John’s University in Queens. Recipient of a Merit Scholarship and a 3.95 GPA, she received the “Best in Show –Mixed Media” at the WCS Art Exhibition and other awards for her work. Her community activities include her work with Pre-School children at the St. Nicholas Parish in Flushing among many others.
Matthew F. Mikelatos Sacino
Neuroscience, University of Miami
Hailing from Lighthouse Point, Florida, Matthew graduated 1stin his class of 292 at Cardinal Gibbons H.S. in Ft. Lauderdale. His distinctions also include ranking in the top 1% of students nationally on the SAT, with a score of 2190. His major at the University of Miami will be in the Honors Program on the Neuroscience-Premed track.
Evangelos C. Papadimas
Biological Science, Cornell University
A resident of Ithaca, New York, Evangelos is studying Biological Science at Cornell University where he has also become an “ambassador” of Greek culture to his fellow-students and professors as well. But his interests are much wider, working on a 70-page research paper on anti-Americanism, translating texts from French to English, and teaching Greek at the Parish in Ithaca. Intramural soccer, too!
Stratos George Skarpathiotis
Biological Sciences and Chemistry, University of Chicago
Stratos hails from Burr Ridge, Illinois and is a graduate of Hinsdale Central High School. He presently is pursuing his studies in the Biological Sciences and Chemistry at The University of Chicago. His other interests include classical music, piano and soccer, and his community activities include participating in the life of Sts. Constantine and Helen Parish in Palos Heights, IL.
Marjorie Spiriliotis
Economics and Social Science, DePaul University
Morton Grove, Illinois resident Marjorie Spiriliotis is a 2006 Honors graduate of the Institution Sainte Marie (high school) in France, with a major in Economics/Social Science. She is currently attending DePaul University, pursuing studies in the Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Stephanie Toronidis
Humanities, Drexel University
Stephanie hails from Fair Lawn, New Jersey and is a graduate of its high school and the St. Athanasios Parish Greek School. She was elected President of the Fair Lawn H.S. Chapter of the National Honor Society and serves as Secretary of the French Honor Society. She is active in her Parish’s GOYA, especially on its sports teams; other interests include cooking, travel and visiting family in Greece.
